Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a wildlife conservancy situated in the Laikipia County of Kenya. It was originally a cattle ranch before being converted into a wildlife conservancy in the 1980s. The conservancy covers an area of about 360 square kilometers and is home to a variety of wildlife species, including the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, and buffalo), Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and chimpanzees.
One of the main attractions of Ol Pejeta Conservancy is its population of endangered northern white rhinos. As of 2021, there are only two surviving individuals of this subspecies left in the world, both of which reside at Ol Pejeta. The conservancy is also home to a sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from the illegal pet trade or from laboratories, making it the only place in Kenya where visitors can see chimpanzees.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is committed to conservation and sustainable tourism practices. It has implemented various programs to protect wildlife and their habitat, such as anti-poaching patrols and community conservation initiatives. Additionally, the conservancy has partnered with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic development.
Visitors to Ol Pejeta Conservancy can enjoy a variety of activities, such as game drives, guided walks, and visits to the chimpanzee sanctuary. The conservancy also offers accommodation options ranging from luxury tented camps to budget-friendly campsites.
The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is incorporated within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and is the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen.
